getVIRTUALnow

Brian Madden did a recent post on Microsofts "getVIRTUALnow" roadshow. It revealed some interesting points in regards to VDI.
  • The speaker from Microsofts internal IT department talked about using Terminal services to provide desktops to users of companies taken over. Their problem was that without admin priv they could not install applications or personalise things such as backrounds. Now Brian freaks out that you can do personalisation in TS which is true but the point is still valid. Being able to provide a full desktop experience is important. VDI can deliver this and you can have one platform with varying degrees of access.
  • The application and desktop virtualisation that Microsoft are doing align well with what VMware are doing. Thinapp, fusion, VDI, its all there.
Its a good review and worth the read. However Brian needs to start thinking about things broader than TS. VDI can achieve a wider set of use cases with a set of products, you don't have to do a one size fits all.
